The Importance of Healthy Engine Drive Belts

The timing belt, also known as the camshaft drive belt or timing chain, synchronizes the rotation of the engine's camshaft and crankshaft, ensuring precise timing of the engine's valves and pistons which draw in fuel and oxygen. It is typically made of a durable rubber compound reinforced with high-strength fibers, such as fiberglass. These materials provide the necessary strength and flexibility to withstand the heat and tension generated by the engine's operation.

The serpentine belt is similar in materials but is responsible for driving various engine components such as the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. It is called a serpentine belt due to its winding path around multiple pulleys. Serpentine belts are typically made of a rubber compound with embedded cords, such as polyester or aramid fibers, which enhance their strength and resistance to stretching and wear.

Symptoms of a Failing Engine Belt

Signs of failing engine belts can include squealing or chirping noises, particularly during engine startup or when accessories are in use. Visible signs of wear or damage, such as cracks, fraying, or glazing, are also indications that the belts may need replacement. In the case of both belts, it is wise to conduct routine inspections after 70,000 miles to ensure quality and functionality.
